3D Printing for Space Applications
From CubeSat and smallsat development fixtures to propulsion tooling, ground support equipment, and harness jigs, space teams use Original Prusa fleets to move from design to functional parts in days, on ESD-safe, low-outgassing space-grade materials, with a transparent, allied supply chain.
Where Space Teams Use Additive Manufacturing
A single desktop fleet replaces slow, costly outsourcing for the tooling, fixtures, and ground support hardware that keep programs moving, iterating in hours instead of weeks. Desktop FDM is for prototyping, tooling, and GSE, not certified flight structure.
CubeSat & Smallsat Development
Development fixtures, structural prototypes, and iteration hardware for CubeSat and smallsat programs, produced in-house to compress design cycles from weeks to days.
Propulsion & Test-Stand Tooling
Mounting hardware, adapters, and test-rig components for propulsion and test-stand work, printed in engineering polymers that hold up to elevated temperatures and mechanical load.
Ground Support Equipment (GSE)
Custom GSE, handling aids, protective covers, and bench tooling made on demand, replacing slow machined-metal outsourcing for the everyday parts that keep a program moving.
Harness-Routing & Potting Jigs
Wire-harness routing guides, potting molds, and assembly jigs in ESD-safe and dimensionally stable materials, well suited to work around sensitive electronics.
Brackets & Enclosures
Lightweight brackets, housings, and enclosures for non-flight and flight-adjacent hardware. Desktop FDM is a prototyping, tooling, and GSE tool, not a substitute for certified flight structure.
Recommended Machines for Space
Purpose-matched to space workloads, from an everyday enclosed fleet workhorse to high-temperature super polymers and air-gappable, critical-infrastructure configurations.
Prusa CORE One+ (Gen 2)
Everyday fleet workhorse: Fully enclosed and upgradeable for consistent prints in ASA, PC, nylon, and Prusament PC Space Grade Black. The everyday machine for rapid iteration across a space engineering team.
Prusa CORE One L Critical Infrastructure Edition
Larger build, controlled environments: A larger-format enclosed platform in a Critical Infrastructure configuration, suited to air-gapped, offline operation for sensitive space and defense-adjacent programs.
Prusa Pro HT90
High-temp super polymers: Actively heated chamber for PEI / ULTEM, PC, and carbon-filled materials, plus support for Prusament PC Space Grade Black. For the most demanding thermal and mechanical requirements.
Materials: Prusament PC Space Grade Black
ESD-safe polycarbonate with ESA-verified low outgassing
Developed by Prusa Research with Czech space company TRL Space, Prusament PC Space Grade Black is an ESD-safe polycarbonate that prints on common desktop Prusa machines.
Headline specs: outgassing TML 0.25% (ESA limit 1%), CVCM 0.00% (limit under 0.1%), RML 0.12% (limit 1.0%); resistivity 2.2×10⁴ Ω·m volume and 6×10⁷ Ω/sq surface; tensile strength 75 MPa, modulus 3.7 GPa, interlayer adhesion 18 MPa, HDT 137.6 °C at 0.45 MPa.
Material figures are from Prusa Research's published Prusament PC Space Grade Black results (outgassing tested at an ESA-affiliated laboratory). Structural space certification is in progress; confirm current classification before any flight-adjacent use. MSDS and documentation available on request.
Space-Grade & Engineering Materials
Three Prusament materials anchor space and electronics work — from the flagship space-grade polycarbonate to high-temperature super polymers and flame-retardant PETG. The broader ecosystem adds PC Blend, PA / Nylon, and ASA.
Prusament PC Space Grade Black
The flagship: an ESD-safe, carbon-filled polycarbonate developed with Czech space company TRL Space. Per Prusa Research, ESA-lab outgassing measured TML 0.25%, CVCM 0.00%, and RML 0.12%, and it prints on common desktop Prusa machines.
Prusament PEI 1010
A high-temperature polyetherimide (PEI 1010, an ULTEM-grade super polymer) with strong thermal and chemical resistance. Per Prusa Research, it prints only on the actively heated Prusa Pro HT90 (heated chamber, minimum 90 °C).
Prusament PETG V0
A UL-certified self-extinguishing PETG rated UL94 V-0 (tested per IEC 60695-11-10, with a UL Blue Card certificate), pairing flame retardancy with the easy printing of standard PETG.
Full Spool Traceability
Every Prusament spool carries full production traceability. Prusa Research publishes per-spool manufacturing data — diameter consistency, ovality, weight, length, and standard deviation — accessible online by scanning the spool's QR code, and guarantees ±0.02 mm diameter tolerance on most materials from its in-house production line.
New Prusament spools also ship with a rewritable NFC tag built on the open OpenPrintTag standard, so supported printers can identify the material offline, with no cloud dependency.
Why Space Teams Choose Prusa
| What Space Programs Need | The Prusa / Printed Solid Approach |
|---|---|
Fleet economics: Prototyping, tooling, and GSE without industrial-system capital cost or per-part service-bureau fees. |
Desktop fleets, not single machines: Scale from one printer to a 5–30 machine cell at a fraction of the cost of legacy industrial platforms from Stratasys, Markforged, or HP, with onboarding and volume pricing. |
Regulatory & supply-chain fit: NDAA FY2026 §849 bars China-made or China-networked additive manufacturing from DoD use (effective 18 Dec 2026), which reaches defense-adjacent space primes and their suppliers. |
Allied, transparent hardware: Designed and built in the EU and assembled in the USA (Wilmington, DE); TAA compliant. A clear origin story for programs that must document their supply chain. |
Security & data control: Sensitive programs need machines that run without forced cloud dependencies. |
Open and air-gappable: Open-source toolchain with offline, air-gapped operation available for controlled environments. No mandatory cloud connection. |
Space-appropriate materials: ESD-safe, low-outgassing polymers for hardware that works around sensitive electronics. |
Space-grade material ecosystem: Prusament PC Space Grade Black (ESD-safe, ESA-verified low outgassing) alongside PC Blend, PA / Nylon, ASA, and high-temp options on the Pro HT90. |
