The collaboration

Built for orbit, with TRL Space

Developed with TRL Space — a Brno-based company delivering turnkey space missions in cooperation with the European Space Agency — PC Space Grade Black was benchmarked against a Finite Element Method simulation of a single-unit CubeSat, and cleared every minimum mechanical target that simulation set.

It is the first Prusament for which Prusa Research has filed a patent application; the highest polymer classification — which would allow structural use such as CubeSat frames — is still pending test results.

Why it matters in vacuum

Outgassing that meets ESA limits

Under vacuum, polymers release residual monomers and degradation products that can contaminate optics, throw off precise sensors, and degrade the part itself. Meeting low-outgassing limits is normally the preserve of expensive industrial materials like PEKK and PEEK — materials that need costly industrial machines. This polycarbonate does it on a desktop Prusa — verified on 3D-printed samples at an ESA-affiliated laboratory (Aerospace & Advanced Composites GmbH).

Electrostatic dissipation

ESD-safe, straight off the bed

Carbon additives place the material squarely in the dissipative range (10⁴–10¹¹ Ω). Measured on printed samples with no post-processing — no annealing, no sanding:

Advanced engineering

Anyone working with electronics: ESD-safe device housings, custom PC cases and precision components — printed and put straight into use, no post-processing required.

Prusa is targeting the highest polymer classification — which would allow use in structural components such as CubeSat frames — but several test results are still pending. Today the material is validated for less-demanding, lower-stress space applications (housings, wire holders, deployer parts).
Traceable, end to end
The entire manufacturing process of a component is traceable from start to finish — from filament data to print telemetry.

Made in-house

Prusa Research is the only 3D-printer manufacturer producing its own filament. PC Space Grade Black is made in-house to a guaranteed diameter tolerance.

Per-spool data

Every Prusament spool ships with published manufacturing data — diameter consistency, weight, length, ovality and standard deviation — checkable by scanning the spool.

Smart, offline spools

New spools carry a rewritable NFC tag on the open OpenPrintTag standard: essential material data stored on the tag, read entirely offline — no cloud, no vendor lock-in.

Printer, nozzle, material — validated together

No industrial system required. Nozzle 290 ±10 °C, heatbed 120 ±10 °C, a hardened nozzle (the carbon additives are abrasive) and no enclosure necessary. Models up to 200×200 mm print with little to no warping. Prusa makes the printer, the nozzle and the filament, so the machine profile and the material are tuned to one another.

Original Prusa Hardened Nozzle

The carbon additives that make this polycarbonate dissipative are abrasive, so a hardened nozzle is required. Nickel plating aids heat transfer and holds up at high temperatures — rated to 300 °C, above this material’s 290 ±10 °C target.
