PEI 1010

Polyetherimide — the polymer branded ULTEM — is one of the most resistant materials you can 3D print. Flame-retardant, gamma-resistant and strong enough to replace aluminum alloys, made in-house by Prusa Research.

Flame-retardant
Inherently self-extinguishing · no additive package
Gamma-resistant
Holds up under radiation exposure
Metal-replacing
Strong enough to substitute for aluminum alloys
Chemical-resistant

Printer, sheet, dry box, material — fully integrated

PEI 1010 cannot be printed on the MK, XL or MINI series — the temperatures simply are not attainable. It needs a heated chamber of 90 °C or more, a 410 ±10 °C nozzle and a 150 ±10 °C heatbed. It also absorbs moisture extremely readily, so Prusa requires it to be dried before every print and kept in a dry box while printing. Prusa makes every link in that chain — the machine, the print surface, the dry box and the filament — so the profile, the sheet and the material are validated together.

Prusa USS Drybox

PEI is extremely hygroscopic and has to stay dry while it prints, not just before. This sealed box holds the spool and feeds the printer directly — load it once and leave it in there until the spool is empty.

The material

An ULTEM-class super polymer

PEI 1010 (polyetherimide, branded ULTEM) is one of the most resistant 3D-printing polymers available — built for specialized, demanding industrial work. It combines great high-temperature and chemical resistance with excellent mechanical properties.

It is inherently flame-retardant and resistant to gamma radiation, and as one of the most resistant materials it can go straight into service as a functional part — even as a replacement for aluminum alloys. That combination makes it usable across aerospace, medical and other high-demand applications.

Made in-house by Prusa Research to a guaranteed ±0.05 mm diameter tolerance.

Handling note: PEI 1010 is extremely prone to moisture absorption. It must be dried before every print and kept in a dry box while printing, and large prints are prone to warping. Our team can advise on drying, chamber setup and part orientation.

Made in-house

Prusa Research is the only 3D-printer manufacturer producing its own filament. Prusament PEI 1010 is made in-house to a guaranteed ±0.05 mm diameter tolerance, with the whole manufacturing process monitored and tested — string diameter, color consistency and mechanical properties.

Per-spool data via QR

Prusa is the only manufacturer that lets you inspect the parameters of every spool it makes. Scan the QR code on the spool to see that spool’s published data online — diameter consistency, ovality, weight, length and standard deviation against the stated tolerance.

Smart, offline spools

PEI 1010 ships on an NFC spool. New Prusament spools carry a rewritable NFC tag on the open OpenPrintTag standard: essential material data stored on the tag and read entirely offline — no cloud, no vendor lock-in.
